Society of St. Vincent de Paul

“Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul.” – svdpusa.org

The Society of St.Vincent de Paul is an international organization of lay Catholics who join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are suffering, deprived or neglected in response to the clear call of Jesus to all of us to befriend and serve those in need.

There is a common perception that the poor and those receiving welfare choose handouts instead of working. Sadly, there are great numbers of working poor who live paycheck to paycheck. Often, they work longer hours at more onerous tasks for less pay than middle class workers. All it takes is one unexpected expense, such as paying for a parent’s funeral, fixing the car, or missing 3 day’s work due to a sick child, to put them in debt and eventually in danger of being evicted or having their utilities cut off. The hope of SVdP is to give enough help to get them over the immediate problem and self-sufficient again. It is always so gratifying to hear on our follow-up calls, “I’m going to be ok now.”

We want to invite you to consider joining the Holy Spirit St. Vincent de Paul Society. Membership is about the spiritual growth of members, the fellowship and friendships that bind members, and the works of charity for our neighbors in need. There are a variety of different ways members serve, and each member chooses which activities they participate in.  Right now, our greatest need is for people who can accompany an experienced Vincentian to visit those who call us asking for help.  This usually takes 1 to 2 hours on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday (your choice). Even if a volunteer can go once a month, that is a help. We would especially encourage young adults, age 18 and up, to give it a try.  If you are interested in seeing how you can participate in our outreach, please send an email to Steve Monaco at svdp.hsv.hs@gmail.com, or feel free to stop by one of our weekly meetings in the multipurpose room (Tuesday at 9:30am or Thursday at 6pm).
