The Sacrament of Eucharist (Communion) is offered to children during their second grade year. Preparation for this sacrament takes place in our second grade classrooms and is taught by our second grade teachers. If the child attends Holy Spirit School, he or she will be prepared for this sacrament by their second grade teachers as part of the Religion Class each day at school.
If the child attends a public school or a non-Catholic private school, he or she will be prepared for this sacrament during our Religious Education Classes that take place on Sundays from 10:15-11:30 am.
First Communion Requirements:
It is required that each child is prepared for this sacrament in a classroom setting. The children will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to First Eucharist. Children making First Communion are required to know the Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade prayers prior to making their First Reconciliation. Children must be baptized before making First Reconciliation. A copy of the child’s Baptismal Certificate should be turned into the Church Office at the beginning of the school year or at the Parent Meeting for First Reconciliation that takes place in October . If the child is not baptized, contact us several months prior to making First Reconciliation. If the child was baptized in a different faith, the child needs to become Catholic by bringing the child into the Catholic Church. This is done by making a simple “Profession of Faith”.
There is a required Parent Meeting for First Communion. For the 2014-2015 School Year, that meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 17th at 6:30 PM in the school auditorium.
OPTIONAL FAMILY BANNERS: It is customary that your child make a banner for First Communion. The banners can be anything that your child feels expresses his or her First Communion. This is a great family activity. See the Banner Information sheet for details.
Nurturing Your Child’s Faith in the Eucharist will help you better prepare your child for First Communion.
